Its time to eat better people

So, how do you feel about sauce?

Most people don’t appreciate sauce, but sauce completes a meal, and I don’t mean BBQ sauce. Well, BBQ sauce is good too…. But I love sauces, gravies, stewed meats, and anything dripping. As an adult I can appreciate the combination of food layers, like mac and cheese and sweet potatoes. But what about stewed collard greens, tomatoes, and beans? If your nose turned up, feel free to close out this blog.

When I crave something fresh, comforting and clean I take a trip to Funmis Café. This small café located at 3028 Bardstown Rd; Louisville KY features modern Nigerian food made with the best local ingredients. My favorites are the vegetable samosas made with lentils, sweet potatoes and greens stuffed in a thin pastry shell and deep fried. For my main meal I prefer the chicken stew with efo riro and asaro. The stewed chicken consists of dark or light meat stewed in a tomato pepper base red sauce, the efo riro is a deeply cooked collard green stew with tomatoes, garlic, and peppers. I love adding tomatoes to my greens, but I had never cooked tomatoes in my greens, this is a different take and to me provides some acidity to the greens and sweetness. The Asaro is probably my favorite, its smashed yams... not sweet potatoes but African yams with garlic, onion and of course tomatoes. Seems to be a theme, but I love tomatoes and with summer right around the corner these dishes will be amplified!

Now I know we eat with our eyes first, and we have become so conditioned to like shiny, buttery food with green flakes, but stewed food is so comforting, filling and light. I know that sounds like a contradiction but its food that isn’t highly processed and easy to digest. You feel fulfilled but not weighed down. I cant speak for anyone but my body craves fresh food especially after eating like a hibernating bear all quarantine year. I hope you all can check it out, and happy eating.
