When I think back on what set in motion my infatuation with food I can’t pinpoint it to one event. Was it that first shrimp my Big mama gave me from her long john silver box? Or the awesome dinners our Bubbe creates in her beautiful home? I do know the combination of events begins and ends with my Grandmothers soul food. Her food created a comfort that still sweeps me into a deep nostalgia if I even smell homemade cornbread dressing. Being that no one could ever compare to my grandmothers cooking I rarely visit soul food restaurants, but for a friend I made an exception. For her birthday she wanted Dasha Barbour’s for lunch located at 2217 Steier Lane 40214. When you enter this establishment already prepared for it to be a soul food restaurant, you already have your assumption of what the environment will be and what the food will taste like, however this place is different. Beautiful is an understatement, when you walk in, it’s so calming and relaxing you just want to sit and read while enjoying a nice coffee. Although I came to EAT! So I ordered the fried chicken with a waffle and my bestie had fried pork chops with collard greens and sweet potato casserole. The chicken was crispy, juicy and seasoned to perfection! It was a wonderful addition to the waffle with the cinnamon butter that melted into my waffle creating puddles of sweet deliciousness in each little square! Of course I asked for hot sauce and my sweet dish took on a whole new spicy, mapley (I made it up) flavor. I truly enjoyed my meal and I enjoyed my friend’s meal, her pork chop was boneless and moist, the greens had a very mild but flavorful taste. I was pleasantly surprised by my whole experience! I joked to my friend about sitting there all day with the soothing atmosphere and great food it totally was doable, yet I had to return to my chaotic life that moves too fast for me to stop and smell the fresh fried chicken at times. Please take your time out to enjoy a delicious meal at a wonderful eatery, with smiling faces who serve damn good soul food! Happy Friday, Happy Eaters!
